MAIMANA (SW) – More than four thousand families have been forced to flee from Faryab’s Andkhoy district following deadly clashes between the Taliban and the security forces.
Bashir Ahmad Tayanej, member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house), said the situation in Andkhoy is worrying. He said many people in Andkhoy and in the surroundings are faced with shortage of food and water, some even died.
According to the provincial council member, Aq Mohammad Noori, the internally displaced people have no shelters in Andkhoy, and most of them are sleeping on roads or in commercial guest houses with no food. One of the displaced people, Raheema, told Salam Watandar the rebels forced the locals to feed them food after they captured the villages. She added this left no other options for them, but to flee.
Meanwhile, Aqa Mohammad Raheem, head of the directorate of refugees and repatriates, said a committee has been formed to provide emergency relief to the needy families.
Naqibullah Fayeq, governor of Faryab, stressed a day earlier the military operation would continue to evade threats to the Aqina Port.
