Fighting displaces hundreds of families in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (SW) – Hundreds of families have been forced to flee Nangarhar’s Sherzad district owing to deadly clashes between the Taliban and pro-Daesh insurgents.

Najibullah Qayumi, head of the directorate of refugees and repatriation, told Salam Watandar at least 409 families have been displaced in the Gandamak, Marakikhail and a number of other parts of the district. He said this number can further surge amid ongoing unrest here.

He said survey teams are busy in counting and evaluating the needs of the displaced families forced to flee from Sherzad and Khogyani districts of the province.

Meanwhile, Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor, has said the exact number of displaced families is not known yet. He vowed the ongoing security operation against the insurgents would help the displaced families to return to their homes.

A local displaced person, Shaukat, said the war-weary civilians demand the government to ensure their peaceful return to their homes. He added fighting is still underway, and many families still stranded in the restive parts of the district are also seeking to flee.

Last week, the Taliban stormed district headquarters of the Sherzad, but the security forced pushed them back after intense exchange of fire.
