KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Some fifty thousand students remain deprived of basic education in Kandahar province due to the closure of a number of schools.
Local officials have confirmed as many as 153 schools are closed in various parts of the city due to the ragging violence. Muhibullah Qaderi, director for the directorate of education, has acknowledged this fact. He told Salam Watadar out of the total of 573 schools, only420 are functional while the rest of 153 are closed.
The director for education in the province noted that Shorawak, Registan and Ghorak districts have not a single functional public school. He added the rest of closed schools are located in other districts of the province.
Besides the endemic insecurity, the official has also blamed lack of interest on the part of the residents for the closed schools.
