FEFA urges parliamentarians not to ignore voters

KABUL (SW): The Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) has lamented the parliamentarians for ignoring public.

Haseeb Mutarif, observer for parliamentary affairs at FEFA, addressing a press conference here on Monday, said FEFA has looked into improvements, shortcomings and achievements of the parliament for solar year 1395. The report shows that a total of 41 documents which include bills and executive decrees were approved, 37 laws introduced and 37 international instruments ratified by the parliament.

According to Mutarif, attendance of the members in the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) during sessions in average was around 50 per cent while in the Meshrano Jirga (upper house) the attendance was slightly over 50 percent. “The law makers have ignored people properly”, lamented Mutarif.

Meanwhile, Jafar Mehdawi, a Wolesi Jirga member from Kabul, has rejected the findings of FEFA. He said the representatives are busy with the complaints of their voters. “Traditional values and mindsets of the parliamentarians have slowed down the law making process”, informed Mehdawi.

Parliament Secretariat told Salam Watandar that the legislators have approved 31 bills into laws and rejected 8 drafts last year.
