MAIMANA (SW): Chairman of the provincial council in Faryab, Mohammad Taher Rehmani, has expressed concerns about the possible fall of the province to the Taliban.
The PC chairman told Salam Watandar that this issue has been shared with the provincial administration, but no measures have been put in place to address these concerns. He claimed the Taliban control significant areas in all districts where the government’s control is limited to few villages.
He vowed the locals would take to the streets to warn officials about Kunduz-like fate of Faryab.
Meanwhile, Jawed Bedar, spokesman for the provincial governor, has discarded these remarks. He went on to say such comments are in favor of the enemy. The governor’s spokesman informed plan is in sight to launch a military operation in the area.
The provincial headquarters of the police has also rejected remarks by the PC chairman. Karim Yourish, spokesman for police, said in this regard that security forces are vigilant, and there are no fears about the fall of the province to the Taliban.
Faryab residents, however, are concerned about the state of security in the province. They said the Taliban are present in many areas, and mobility of people has been restricted.
This comes as Gen. Amanullah Mubeen, the Commander of the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s 209-Shaheen Corps, visited Faryab last week, and pledged to drastically improve security situation in the country.
