Faryab’s acclaimed carpet industry in decline

FARYAB (SW) – The world-acclaimed traditional carpet weaving industry of Faryab province in Afghanistan is faced with extinction.

A number of individuals associated with this trade lamented the government was not striving hard enough to find new markets. They said lack of markets has forced many to quit.

Paiman Haidari, a local trader, once had a carpet weaving unit in Faryab. He said up to five hundred women were working at his facility, but lack of market forced him to close down.

In this backdrop, Kher Mohammad, a carpet trader, said the industry has been on the receiving end for the past two years. He added that prior to this, he used to sell many carpets, but no more.

Some estimates suggest up to 70 per cent of Faryab carpet weaving industry has already vanished. Naseer Ahmad Azimi, head of the Faryab Chamber of Commerce and Industries, agrees. He told Salam Watandar the monthly output of this sector, which once stood at hundreds of thousands of square meters in the past, has now dropped to only few thousand square meters.

The carpet weaving sector has been the source of income for up to 30 per cent of the population. A number of carpet varieties from Faryab province are famous worldwide.
