MONITORING (SW) – President Ashraf Ghani on Monday lauded EU’s support for the republic and a nationwide cease-fire in Afghanistan.
A statement by the presidency said President Ghani had a phone conversation with Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. ‘The EU High Representative expressed EU’s enduring support for strengthening and protecting the values of republic and declaring support for an independent, united and democratic Afghanistan, which is the end state pursued by the Afghan government’, it said.
According to the statement, Borrell said the EU will deliver the message to the Taliban that the union’s future support for Afghanistan will depend upon preservation of the values of republic in the country.
On the maiden day of intra-Afghan talks, Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation, urged upon the need to preserve democratic values and rights of women and press freedom. Meanwhile, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar stressed in his remarks upon establishing ‘an Islamic system' in Afghanistan.
The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also present on the inaugural session of these talks in Doha.
