EU encourages Taliban to join peace process

TASHKENT (SW): Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has vowed to help lift sanctions imposed on the Taliban if the armed rebels enter peace negotiation

She said this at the Tashkent Conference on Afghanistan in Uzbekistan on Tuesday. She urged the international community to cooperate with the Afghan government in combating terrorism and bring peace to the country. She said there is a golden opportunity for the armed rebels to join the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.

The High Representative of the EU added the ragging violence in Afghanistan pose threat to regional countries as well, and the international community, particularly the Central Asian states should cooperate with Afghanistan curbing the menace of terrorism. Morherini reiterated the EU’s support for Afghanistan.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan said on the occasion his country supports decisions adopted by participants of the second meeting in the framework of the Kabul process in favor of launching direct talks between the Afghan government and Taliban movement without preliminary conditions and threats of use of violence.

 “We stand ready to create all necessary conditions, at any stage of the peace process, to arrange on the territory of Uzbekistan the direct talks between the government of Afghanistan and Taliban movement”.

On his term, Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani urged the armed rebels to accept the unprecedented offer of peace. He said on the occasion that the terrorist groups do not respect geography and borders, and pose threat to the whole region and the world. He said regional countries should unite to help Afghanistan achieve peace.

Heads and representatives of foreign policy institutions of the People’s Republic of China, Russian Federation, United States of America, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, France,  Italy, Turkey, India, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, as well as international and regional organizations attended the conference.
