BAMIYAN (SW): Environmentalists in the Waras district of Bamiyan province have expressed concerns over the hunting of wolves in the area saying that the residents have hunted more than 12 wolves in the past two months alone.
Mohammad Amin Danishyar, one of the activists in Waras district, told Salam Watandar that the hunting of wild animals, especially the wolves, has been a trend in this area.
According to this environmental activist, authorities have not taken any action to prevent hunting of wildlife and wild animals in this area so far. However, officials at the Environmental Protection Agency have said hunting of animals and birds are prohibited in this area and no person or group has the right to hunt wild animals and birds.
Mohammad Ibrahim Dadfar, Director EPA in Bamyan, told Salam Watandar the residents in different areas in this province have hunted wild animals and birds and have been smuggling these animals outside the country.
In different areas of Bamiyan, including Band Amir, Yakawlang Valley, Fowladi Valley, Baba Peaks and Hindukush, more than 170 kinds of animals exist such as wolves, hyenas, wild bears, foxes, different kinds of deer, and Persian leopards which need protection and attention, Mr Dadfar added.
Hunting of wild animals, especially wolves, is reported to have increased recently as the EPA has listed 11 kinds of wild animals including wolf as endangered wild animals here.
