KABUL (SW): After the change in leadership at the electoral commissions, it’s office equipment has been ‘stolen’, the Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) claimed on Wednesday.
Mohammad Naeem Aybzada, head of TEFA told a press conference on Wednesday furniture, computers and legal documents at the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the Independent Election Complaint Commission (IECC) have been ‘stolen’ since the change in leadership there. He urged the government to ensure timely elections for the parliament and the district councils.
Ayubzada also stressed upon the need to ensure transparency, and curbing corruption at the electoral bodies. The government should ensure to stop political interference and fraud, he said.
Sughra Sadat, spokesperson for TEFA, said on the occasion the IEC and IECC should come-up with a practical program for reforms.
The TEFA officials underlined the need for timely Wolesi Jirga (lower house) and district council elections, as well as marking of the constituencies and finalization of the voters’ list.
Salam Watandar wished to obtain the views of the electoral commissions in this regard but to no avail.
