KABUL (SW): Civil society activists have urged upon the Parliament to push for notable increase in the budget for education in the country.
This call was made on Wednesday by the Movement for Support of Quality Education in Afghanistan (MSQEA), Watch on Basic Rights Afghanistan Organization (WBRAO) and Movement 57. Representatives of these organisation stressed that education is one of the most basic components for lawful, democratic systems, and democratic society. They highlighted problems in the education system, and urged the parliament to increase education budget by 15 percent.
They noted low level education, lack of educators, lack of school buildings and professional curriculum, lack of libraries and laboratories, lack of sport grounds, clean drinking water, lack of toilets in schools, and other equipment as the main challenges.
Meanwhile, Bakht Mohammad Bakhtiyar, head cultural affairs at the Afghanistan Academy of Sciences, told Salam Watandar that the Ministry of Education (MoE) does not have the capacity to utilize its allotted budget. “Adding another 15 percent to the budget does not seem to be logical”, added Bakhtiyar.
This year, the MoE’s budget is slightly higher than its previous year budget.
