KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Education has joined hand with the Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs (MoHRA) to improve the literacy rate in the country.

According to an agreement signed on Tuesday, the two ministries would strive together to chalk-out plans aimed at educating more and more people. Assadullah Balkhi, Minister for Education, said on the occasion that religious leaders in various parts of the country would be engaged to provide basic education to those individuals who cannot attend regular schooling.

He noted that those religious leaders engaged in this process would be paid a humble stipend and would be provided with the books.

Balkhi expressed optimism about this initiative helping to reduce illiteracy across the country.

“Literacy is not classified in terms of peaceful or restive areas, there are mosques in all areas”, he said.

Faiz Mohammad Usmani, Minister for Hajj and Religious Affairs, said in this regard that some 150 registered mosques are operating across the country that would help a lot for lifting the literacy ratio. He stressed that good coordination between the two ministries would yield good results.

“The Ministry of Education is committed to provide education facilities at the people’s doorstep and the Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs is ready to provide its support for this noble cause”, he said.

As per the official figures, only 38 percent of the population in Afghanistan can be categorized as basically literate.
