KABUL (SW): By the end of this week the final list of new commissioners would be sent to the President of the electoral commissions. Yuosef Rashid, member of the Committee of Selection, said that they are trying to prepare a list of 21 candidates for the Independent Election Commission. He noted that this list would be sent to the President who would finally appoint 7 of them as commissioners for IEC (Independent Election Commission) and 5 of them as commissioners for IECC (Independent Electoral Complaints Commission).
Yuosef Rashid asserted that all would-be commissioners will be selected on merit bases.
In response to whether the election would be hold on time, Omid Maisam, the deputy spokesperson for Chief Executive Office stated that election would not be held on its due date. Expressing no more details about the reason for delay, Maisam noted that the government is committed to launch the election and implement the political agreement.
Meanwhile, members of civil society, who were speaking at a press conference here on Monday, asked the Committee of Selection to carefully choose all members for election commissions. These civil society activists urged the Committee of Selection to handpick the members on merit bases.
Speaking at a press conference, Khalil Raufi, a civil society activist stated that the committee members must be consisted of both male and female. The committee members should not be members of political parties and human rights abusers, he added.
The Committee of Selection was found to bring reforms in electoral agreement after the disputed presidency election in 2014.
