Drugs being sold openly in Kandahar city

KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Some residents in the city of Kandahar and its nearby districts have said that easy access to drugs in the city have increased addiction among the youth.

These residents accusing local police involvement with drug dealers said drugs are sold openly in the city.

Mohammad Sadiq, a resident of Arghandab district and an addict for 10 years, told Salam Watandar that all drug dealers openly sell drugs in the city. According to him, easily and openly availability of drugs has resulted in drug addiction among the young.

Mohammad Qasem, a resident of PD 9 of the province, said his minor child has become an addict due to open drug dealings in the city.

He urged the government to deal strictly with the drug dealers in the city.

Zia Durrani, the provincial police spokesman, rejecting the allegations assured that the provincial police is capable preventing any vice. “If any policeman is involved in drug selling, he will be prosecuted”, added Durrani.

According to United Nations Disarmament Commission (UNDC), there are around 100 thousand drug addicts in Kandahar province, out of which 10 thousand are women.
