Drug trafficking increases in Afghanistan; 15 drug traffickers arrested in past 10 days

KABUL (SW): Ministry of Interior (MoI) authorities said that in the past 10 days 15 persons have been arrested on the suspicion of drug trafficking at the Hamid Karzai international airport here in Kabul.

Sayed Mehdi Kazimi, the spokesman for Deputy Ministry of Counter Narcotics (DMoCN) of Ministry of Interior, told Salam Watandar that in the past 10 days 15 persons have been arrested in relations to trafficking of 6 kilograms of drugs from the Hamid Karzai international airport.

According to the spokesman for the DMoCN the organization has launched measures against drug trafficking especially at the Hamid Karzai international airport. “Our intelligence reports indicate that 95 per cent of drug trafficking happens at the Hamid Karzai international airport”, added Kazimi.

Mohammad Hanif Danishyar, the spokesman for the Ministry of Counter Narcotics, also said that increasing insecurity will cause a surge in the opium cultivation in the country this year. He added that opium cultivation has increased in Helmand, Uruzgan, Faryab, Kandahar, and Nangarhar including two districts of Balkh.

The counter narcotics authorities of the MoI claimed that the neighboring countries have not complied with their promises at the Regional Countering Narcotics Summit, unfortunately, the neighboring countries are still a safe transit route for drug trafficking.
