Drought in Takhar affects agriculture harvest

11/04/2018

TAKHAR (SW): Officials at the Directorate of Water Management in Takhar have reported a 50 percent drop in water level in the province, saying possible clashes between the farmers predicted.

Salam Akbar, the director of Directorate of Water Management in Takhar told Salam Watandar that a shortage of water is expected as the weather gets warmer in the summer-time.

Local officials in Takhar said they have asked the farmers to grow less rice this season in order to prevent clashes between the farmers over the shortage of water.

Salem Saee, head of Directorate of Agriculture in Takhar said rice cultivation will likely drop by 70% this year due to lack of enough water needed for the crop.

Every year 80,000 acres of land was allocated for the rice farming which requires plenty of water, however, only 30% of these lands will be allocated for the cultivation this year.
