Drought and increasing losses of livestock

09/04/2018

KABUL (SW): This past winter, Afghanistan did not get much snow and rain in comparison to previous years; hence concerns have been raised over the drought in the country.

At today’s meeting, representatives in the Wolesi Jirga said the low rainfall and snow in the past winter have caused the livestock owners to sell their livestock for a low price and in some cases, the death of livestock due to the severity of drought has been reported.

Abdul Rahim Raheen said the government does not have any plans to manage the drought and the losses of livestock due to drought, therefore, many farmers and livestock owners have incurred losses across the country.

Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said the issue has been repeatedly shared with the government officials but to no avail.

The speaker of the House, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi set up a commission to talk with the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock officials to find a solution to this dilemma.

In the past, Afghanistan has asked Turkmenistan to provide pastures to Afghan livestock in the event of drought, likewise, the Speaker of the house called on the government to do the same this year.

Abdullah Abdullah, the CEO of National Unity Government also motioned the drought at the Council of Ministers’ meeting today and vowed to find a practical solution in this regard. Snow and rain have fallen 30% less than previous years in comparison to previous years; CEO Abdullah Abdullah informed the Council of Ministers.

According to experts of the country’s water system, the average annual rainfall is 900 mm in the world, and Afghanistan with an average of 301 mm per year is one of the countries facing the danger of drought.
