28/09/2016

GARDEZ (SW): Local elders, men and women in southeastern Paktia province gathered on Wednesday to mark the 20th death anniversary of the former president Dr. Mohammad Najeebullah.

Participants remembered Najeeb, his vision and sayings about country and the region. Mohammad Rahman, speaker of the provincial council said on the occasion that two decades ago the former president time and again offered peace and pardon to the rebel groups but his offers were reject that led to war and destruction in the country. Participants stressed that had those groups accepted the peace offer, Afghanistan could have avoided the rages of war.

Mahira Ahmadzai, a female participant of the moot said that whatever the late president predicted about foreign interventions and the war have proved true now. She called upon the younger generation to stand-up and defend the motherland against foreign conspiracies. Mahira underlined that Najeeb was killed for his views about the Durand Line. She stressed that the late president’s vision in this regard should be realized.

Najibullah took refuge at the UN compound in Kabul before the Taliban came for him on 26 September 1996 evening. He was castrated him and his brother Shahpur Ahmadzai before the Taliban dragged them to death behind a truck in the streets, and their bodies were hanged on public display at the Aryana Square. This brutal act was globally condemned.
