KABUL (SW) – The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday casted doubts over prospects for timely elections in Ghazni province.
Syed Hafeezullah Hashimi, IEC commissioner, told a presser that the persistent differences over the demarcation of constituencies in Ghazni province have made it difficult to hold the forthcoming district and parliamentary elections on time here.
Commenting over the criticism levelled by different political parties towards the voter registration drive, he said the IEC guarantees for each and every registration sticker placed on the identity cards, hence those criticizing the process shall take the matter seriously.
This comes as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, head of the Hezb-e-Islami party, on Tuesday asserted only 3.6 million eligible voters have registered while the IEC claims this figure has crossed the eight million figure. A number of other political parties have also raised concerns over the process while calling for introduction of biometric technology for the voter registration process.
