MAZAR-I-SHARIF (SW): Prosecutors in Balkh province have said cases of violence against women and the rate of divorce are on the rise in the province.
According to a special prosecutor office on elimination of violence against women, some 125 cases of violence against women have been registered, and 70 of them are about divorce. Fawzia Hamidi, a prosecutor in Balkh, said last year 72 cases of violence against women were recorded, but this year the rate is visibly surging.
Shahla Hadeed, director for women affairs in Balkh, told Salam Watandar the provincial government is concerned about the prevailing situation. She noted her directorate has received some 345 formal complaints about domestic violence this year.
A number of women opting for divorce blamed their husbands for not treating them humanely, which left no choice for them but to part ways. Officials believe the culture of impunity for domestic violence has led to the surge in divorce ration in the province.
