District police chief charged with aiding Taliban

28/02/2016

LASHKARGAH (SW): A well-placed source has told Salam Watandar that the interim district chief in southern Helmand’s Sangin district has been arrested by the government for allegedly planning to hand over the district to the Taliban.

The source has noted that the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) together with the NATO forces have arrested the district chief Mohammad Nabi along with a number of policemen.

It is believed that the guy had ties with the Taliban for quite a while and used to provide the militants with arms and ammunitions. The arrest has taken place three days ago, the source said.

Col. Abdul Rahman Sarjang, the provincial police chief, has confirmed the incident.  He told Salam Watandar that Mohammad Nabi and 30 policemen are under investigation.

In his views, a verbal feud between the Afghan National Army (ANA) men with the policemen in Sangin led to the arrest of Mohammad Nabi. As per Sarjang’s knowledge, a policeman died in the feud.

Col. Sarjang stressed that after a thorough investigation in the Shorab military base, the interim district chief has been released.

It is worth noticing that some 65 ANA men reportedly surrendered to the Taliban in Sangin two months ago.
