KABUL (SW) – Disparity is on the rise with spreading poverty in Afghanistan, civil society activists said in connection with the global campaign against inequality.
They blamed endemic corruption, violations of the laws by the powerful and ragging conflict as the main reasons behind growing disparity in the country.
Najiba Ayubi, heading this campaign, said Afghanistan has been covered in this drive under the slogan of ‘Make South Asia Equal for All”. She said the purpose behind this campaign is to compel the Afghan government to pay more attention towards the issue of growing disparity among the citizens, and also urging the civil society organizations to unite for ending poverty and removing disparity.
She noted that the level of disparity in Afghanistan was relatively low between the years of 1980 – 2015, but after that the gap has widened.
On the other end, Roshan Mashal, member of the Afghanistan Women Network, said efforts are underway together with the South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication to make the government accountable for the sake of ending poverty in Afghanistan. She said the government is bound to ensure citizens have access to food, shelter and education.
The moot also issued a statement urging the government to take effective steps towards ending growing disparity among the poor and the rich, end discrimination against women and to create enabling environment for the civil society to raise voice for the rights of the citizens.
