JALALABAD (SW): Residents of Lal Pur district of Nangarhar province have poured to streets in thousands to protest against cross-border shelling by Pakistan.
This protest comes as Pakistani forces have been shelling a number of eastern parts of Afghanistan following a suicide attack in a Sufi shrine in Pakistan which killed over 80 people.
The protestors, while condemning the cross-border shelling, urged the Afghan government to take action as thousands of families have started evacuating their homes fearing for their lives. “If the government does not defend us, we can do it ourselves. We have fought the Pakistanis before and we are ready to do it again and defend our country”, shouted the protestors.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Ayub, commander of the Afghan Border Police (ABP) in the area, said many locals have left their homes while two children have been injured. “Our soldiers are ready to face them and defend Afghanistan”, vowed Ayub.
