Dedicated frontline demining worker on bed for years

KABUL (SW): Dedicating four years of his life as frontline demining worker that cost him his legs and eyes, Noor Ahmad now waits helplessly in Kabul these days for his treatment.

Sharing his ordeal, the 24-year Noor Ahmad old told Salam Watandar that it has been two years that he has been on bed. Noor Ahmad is a native of southern Helmand province where the Taliban brutally killed his father and six other members of his family.

Working alongside the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), Noor Ahmad said he defused up to 511 landmines and detonated 33 more to save his colleagues and civilians.

He noted that the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani after meeting him in person granted a payment of afn 70, 000 but that proved to be very meager to ensure his treatment abroad. Noor Ahmad added that the governor of Helmand Hayatullah Hayat also paid him afn 20, 000 but as he wished to travel to India for treatment he was informed that it would cost at least afn 400, 000 to treat his eyes so that he can see properly.

Captivated by all these troubles, Noor Ahmad is the sole bread winner for his family that includes his two sons, younger brothers and his old mother who are living in the makeshift tents for the displaced people in Helmand’s Moosa Qala district.

This tragic state of affairs however, has failed to break the resolve of Noor Ahmad who wants to serve his countrymen once again if he gets well enough to walk and see again.
