KABUL (SW): An agreement worth $ 85.5 million was signed between the Ministry of Justice and the Asia Foundation for facilitating the poor to access lawyers and other legal services.

Abdul Basir Anwar, Minister of Justice, in a press conference with the head of Asia Foundation, said that based on this contract, the Ministry is obliged to provide children and destitute women with legal facilities in court cases.

Abdullah Ahmadzai, Head of Asia Foundation, said that there have been major problems with regard to legal facilities over the past 10 years and the objective of this contract is to ensure justice for all.

He added that efforts would be made to deliver the services to all the accused who are poor and cannot hire lawyers for themselves.

He further said that there would be a plan for better management of the project.

The project is set to start in 12 months and would present specific recommendations to solve the challenges.

It will also enable the government to apply the Article 31 of the Constitution properly and efficiently.

The Article makes it clear that if the accused is not able to hire a lawyer, the government should provide a lawyer for the accused.

The project is part of a grant assisted by the World Bank.
