KABUL (SW) – Second vice president, Sarwar Danish, said on Saturday peace cannot prevail with exclusive talks between the U.S. and Taliban alone.
Addressing a presser here, the VP said people of Afghanistan have paid plenty of sacrifices during the raging war hence they should be allowed to have a say in the peace process. He added that the Taliban are simply deceiving people by talking about peace, but continuing to cause bloodshed.
Danish said in regard to the presidential polls that the peace deal does not mean diverting the elections. He warned not holding elections would mean collapse of the democratic system and revival of the Taliban’s so-called Emirate.
Present on the occasion, a number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members also lamented that representatives of the public are not taken onboard for the peace talks. Aalim Sahe, an MP, said a peace deal without the participation of public representatives would have no legitimacy.
This comes as peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban are set to resume in Doha, Qatar.
