LASHKARGAH (SW) – The Daesh terrorist organization has begun efforts to resurface in southern Helmand province.
According to the provincial council chairman Attaullah Afghan the group is busy in regrouping and recruiting in the restive northern districts of the province. He said there is a pressing need to take actions in a bid to eliminate potential security threats from emerging in the future.
Few years back, when Daesh surfaced in the province. An air strike killed its leader Mullah Abdul Rauf Khadim, which limited the group’s prospects of spreading here.
Meanwhile, the provincial governor Mohammad Yaseen Khan has rebuked reports about Daesh regrouping and recruiting in the province. He added intelligence reports suggest the group is not active here. The governor added even if Daesh wished to pose a threat, the security and defense forces would crush it.
The Taliban have previously rejected reports about presence of pro-Daesh insurgents in areas under their clout. There has been no immediate reaction from the Taliban about the latest reports.
Many parts in northern Helmand such as Sangin, Moosa Qala, Nauzad, Washer, Baghran and Nomesht have notable presence of the Taliban.
