SHEBERGHAN (SW): Local officials in Jawzjan have said the pro-Daesh militants are obstructing administration of polio vaccination in the province.
According to the locals, up to 25,000 children missed the vaccine in the autumn campaign due to the threats by the militants. Dr. Fareedon Habib, director public health in Jawzjan, informed that the plan was to vaccinate 170,000 children in the province during the latest campaign. He added the militants have not allowed the vaccination to take place in the Qosh Tapa and Darzaab districts.
Mawlawi Lutfullah Azizi, governor Jawzjan, said in this regard that the provincial government is trying hard with the help of the local elders to ensure the children in these areas do not miss the crucial vaccine.
A well-placed source informed Salam Watandar the militants have torched some vaccine and medicine in Qosh Tapa district’s Chaqma Chor area, and have taken away some medical equipment with them. The locals and member of the civil society have raised concerns over the threats depriving children of this important vaccine against polio.
