KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has said the pro-Daesh militants are aiming to entice sectarian rift in Herat province.
According to the MoI, recent attacks on places of worship were designed to target a specific community. At least two mosques of Shia community have been attacked in Herat in the past three months alone. In a similar attack on Sunday, an Imam (prayer leader) was killed and 5 other people were injured in Herat city.
Najibullah Aman, head of criminal investigation directorate at the MoI, visited Herat to assess the situation. He has blamed Daesh for targeting people associated with a specific sect.
Mahdi Hadid, provincial council member, pronounced these attacks on mosques as cowardly acts by anti-Muslim forces. He blamed neighboring countries for fueling violence in Afghanistan, and supporting the Daesh militants. String of attacks on mosques have left many Heratis feel unsafe even inside mosques. The locals have urged the authorities to ensure security in the province.
