KABUL (SW): The power utility De Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) has warned consumers in Kabul to cut-down electricity consumption or load-shedding hours would surge manifold.
DABS officials said today that sudden surge in consumption has forced load-shedding of up to 8 hours a day, and if the trend continued they would be compelled to increase it to up to 12 hours a day.
This has been a recurring phenomenon in the capital Kabul during winters.
Waheedullah Tawhidi, spokesman for the power utility, told Salam Watandar that the capital city is witnessing power outages for up to eight hours a day but, if the Kabul residents failed to cut on their consumption, DABS would have no choice but to increase the load-shedding hours to 12 hours a day.
He noted that the power distribution capacity for the capital is around 300 Megawatts but consumption during winter surges to around 500 Megawatts. He stressed that DABS has established a load-shedding table aimed at ensuring just distribution of power across the city.
Officials at the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) are equally concerned about the long hours of power breakdown. Sayamuddin Pasarly, spokesman for the ACCI told Salam Watandar that many traders and industrialists are thinking about closing down their businesses due to lack of electricity.
