MAZAR-E-SHARIF (SW) – Residents of Mazar-e-Sharif on Saturday took to the streets against an evident surge in armed robberies, abductions and targeted-killings in the city.

At least eight killings have been reported in the city past month alone. Among the protesters was Obaidullah Seyar, father of Engineer Hashmatullah who got killed under suspected circumstances last week. The grieving father said his son went out to fetch a cold drink one night, but his body was later recovered in a sack at a police station two days later.

Majan Azami and Shabnam Mohammadi, two more residents of Mazar-e-Sharif, said the law and order situation has deteriorated and they do not feel safe in the city anymore.

In the meantime, Sher Jan Durrani, spokesman for the police in Jawzjan, acknowledged crimes are on the rise, but stressed efforts are underway to nab the culprits who are behind these crimes.

The crime rate here went up following rift between the former governor, Atta Mohammad Noor, and the presidential palace The appointment of new police chief in the province has not helped bring it down.
