Cricket: U-19 boys off to the mega event of World Cup

KABUL (SW) – Afghanistan’s national Under-19 squad on Wednesday left for South Africa to compete with top 15 other world-class teams at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Vowing to have all preparations in place for the mega event, the Afghanistan Cricket Board Chief Executive, Lutfullah Stanikzai announced the squad. He said an intensive six-month training camp has delivered the final 20-member squad out of a total of 60 selected young cricketers.

Coach for the U-19 squad, Raees Ahmadzai, said on the occasion that the boys would try their best to put-up quality performance at the World Cup in South Africa.

On his term, skipper Farhan Zakhail mentioned the rich experience the team has gathered from recently held Asia Cup competitions. He added the training camps organized by the ICC and the ACB have helped polish the young talent to a great extent.

Afghanistan is scheduled to play two warm-up matches against India and England ahead of the formal competition.

The mega event would take place from 17 January to 9 February 2020 with sixteen teams taking part in the tournament, split into four groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super League, with the bottom two teams in each group progressing to the Plate League. India is the defending champion.
