COVID-19: Religious clerics ignoring safety measures in Kunduz

10/05/2020

KUNDUZ CITY (SW) – Mufti Sirajuddin, a preacher at the Haji Sangi Grand Mosque in Kunduz, told Salam Watandar that the people could not stand the hunger and that the government should lift the restrictions.

He believed the coronavirus was just a ‘rumor’. "Until we see the bodies of the dead on the roads, we will not accept the restrictions," he said.

According to official reports from Kunduz, 53 people have been infected with the coronavirus in the province so far, and two have lost their lives. The local cleric vowed the coronavirus does not kill a person and should not be feared.

Meanwhile, the governor's spokesman Esmatullah Moradi said on Saturday that a number of members of the provincial council, clerics and workers have been urging for lifting the restrictions imposed in the province as precautionary measure against the pandemic. According to the spokesman, these people have pledged to ensure compliance with guidelines if all shops are opened and restrictions are lifted.

Ehsanullah Fazli, Kunduz's head of public affairs, said in this connection that lifting restrictions will make things difficult. He called on the people of the province to follow the orders of the responsible institutions and doctors until the end of the virus epidemic in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, Inayatullah Khaliq, head of the Kunduz civil society, said the local government had not been able to impose proper restrictions on people’s movement since the outbreak of the virus in Kunduz. He said the Kunduz would face difficult times as the clergy continued to ignore the danger of the virus, and the local government as well as those who encourage people to break the restrictions would be responsible for it.
