COVID 19 – Frontline states locked down

25/03/2020

KABUL (SW) – Authorities on Wednesday imposed day-time curfew in three states bordering Iran in a bid to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

This was announced by health ministry's spokesman, Waheedullah Mayar at a press conference.

The lockdown has been enforced in Herat, Farah and Nimroz until further notice, he said, adding the virus has entered epidemic phase in Afghanistan with maiden cases of local transmission confirmed. Until now, most of the cases in the country were linked to neighboring Iran.

Mayar warned If the people continued to defy social distancing and hygiene mechanisms, the virus could infect millions of Afghans and eventually claim hundreds of thousands of lives.

As per official figures, by Wednesday March 25, the number of positive coronavirus cases surged to 80 in Afghanistan.
