Construction and Renovation of 145 schools in Kandahar

KANDAHAR (SW): Officials at the Kandahar Directorate of Education said that several schools have been constructed and more than 100 schools have been renovated this year in Kandahar Province.

Nazar Mohammad Sameemi, the spokesperson for the Kandahar Directorate of Education told Salam Watandar that the new schools have been constructed in Kandahar city as well as in Maiwand, Dand, Arghandab and Daman districts.

'Two religious schools, a science center, several special schools, and five new schools have been built recently', Sameemi added.

Sameemi informed that the construction and renovation of these schools have cost about 200 million AFN, part of which has been paid from the Ministry of Education’s development budget, and the remaining has been paid by the Ministry of Urban Development, the World Bank, and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).

A number of Kandahar intellectuals told Salam Watandar that although the cost is remarkable in terms of the amount of work completed so far, yet with such a great expense, many students in the Kandahar city as well as in many districts have still been studying under the tents, which is a shame.

However, the officials at the Kandahar Directorate of Education have rejected this allegation saying that only in Shurawuk, Ghurak, and Maroof districts due to insecurity and other problems, the schools have not been built or renovated, though in other districts, the work has been completed in the approved manner and the students have been utilizing these facilities.
