Commemoration of the 16th anniversary of Massoud and call for national unity

KABUL (SW): The 16th anniversary of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the national hero of the country, was commemorated here in Kabul on Saturday.

The death anniversary of Massoud and the martyrs’ week with a message for national unity was commemorated with the presence of Chief Executive Officer of the country, former President Hamid Karzai and Jihadi leaders in Kabul. The participants of the gathering praised Ahmad Shah Massoud’s achievements.

Abdullah Abdullah, the CEO of the country, emphasizing on national unity called upon the insurgent groups to join the peace process in order take part in rebuilding the country.

Mohammad Karim Khalili, the chairman of High Peace Council, said that end of war and coming of peace will never be possible without national unity. Believing that Afghanistan has failed in war, he stated: “We have failed in war and any government who comes to power will fail in war and if the National Unity Government fails at anything it will the war. We should come to a final point to this failure which is peace. Today we need peace”.

The High Peace Council chairman criticizing the politicians, writers, analysts, and scholars of the country for creating chasm among the people said that this group of people has tried to divide the people of the community, which has stirred some negative emotions harming the unity of the country. He urged all the people to respect the harmony and unity of the nation.

Also, Ahmad Wali Massoud, the director of Massoud Foundation, stressing on the expansion of national reconciliation throughout Afghanistan, said that the current situation in the country is such that some ethnic, linguistic, tribal polarities have reached its height and urged the people not to allow the country to turn to chaos with a stance against the enemy.

Hamid Karzai, the former president of the country, considering the new strategy of the United States a great tool, said that this strategy has consequences, and Afghanistan must strive to outpace external rivalries. He called on the powerful countries and Afghanistan’s neighbors and the United States not to make Afghanistan a place of their rivalry, but a place of cooperation.

Hamid Karzai talking about Pakistan said that Afghanistan is not against Islamabad instead Afghans wish for Pakistan’s friendship.

Abdullah Abdullah talked about holding talks at the level of national leaders and elders of the country on the new strategy of U.S. He added the new strategy will affect the fate of every individual in the country and considered a talk with the elders of the country necessary on this matter.

Ahmad Shah Masoud, the national hero of country and commander of the northern alliance, was assassinated by 2 Al-Qaeda suicide bombers on 9 September 2001 in Khawaja Bahawudin district of Takhar province.
