Close to 200 deaths in one week

KABUL (SW) – Last week, the Taliban launched widespread attacks in various provinces of the country, resulting in many casualties among the security forces and civilians.

Statistics shared with Salam Watandar by the residents of Takhar showed that in the past week, 37 security forces have been killed in the province, but local Takhar authorities have reported 28 casualties only while 15 Taliban have been reported killed.

After Takhar, Logar province witnessed widespread Taliban attacks and air strikes by security forces.

An authentic local source in Logar, who did not want to be named, told SW that 23 security forces got killed and 12 others got wounded in the Taliban attacks here. It added an airstrike killed 20 civilians, including women and children, and wounded 17 others.

Though, the governor’s spokesman Dedar Ahmad Lawang did not say anything about the death toll, he blamed the Taliban for causing much of the civilian casualties.

Helmand province has also seen heavy fighting between security forces and the Taliban in the past week leaving eight security forces killed and eight others injured. In Kandahar province, last week, 27 security personnel were killed and 20 were injured.

According to local reporters 8 security forces got killed and 5 others got wounded in Oruzgan, 6 security forces got killed and 10 got wounded in Zabul and 4 security forces got killed and 21 others were injured in Ghazni province.

In addition to security forces, a number of civilians were also killed and injured in Kunduz, Nangarhar and Ghazni provinces.

Amruddin Wali, a member of the Kunduz Provincial Council, said 7 civilians were killed and 12 others were wounded during the past week. Security officials in the provinces of Faryab, Nangarhar and Ghazni said 21 civilian got killed and 18 others got wounded here in the past week.

Some military and political experts believe the Taliban have increased their attacks in different provinces in order to gain more privileges in the peace process.
