Civilian casualties soar by 11 per cent

KABUL (SW) – The civilian casualties soared by 11 per cent in the year 1397 in comparison to the year 1396, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission said on Tuesday.

According to Sima Samar, head of the AIHRC, a total of 11212 Afghans either got killed or injured in the past Solar Hijri year. She added this figure stood at 9413 in the year before. Samar said 3032 lives were lost and 8180 people got injured in this period (21 March 2018 till 20 March 2019).

According to the AIHRC, the Taliban are responsible for the 53 per cent of these casualties, the pro-government forces caused some 11.9 per cent of the casualties while the pro-Daesh militants caused 12.5 per cent of the casualties. She added no party took responsibility for the 21 per cent of casualties.

The AIHRC urged the government to sensitize the security forces about human rights laws and put an end to the culture of impunity as well as bringing down civilian casualties.

Sima Samar also urged the warring parties to end war and ceasefire.
