LASHKARGAH (SW): Civil society in Helmand has got their hands on an initiative to investigate cases of administrative corruption in the province.
In line with the International Anti-Corruption Day, members of the civil society gathered in the provincial capital Lashkargah to strengthen the campaign against this evil. The moot was also attended by the provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat and other civil and security officials.
Sardar Mohammad Hamdard, head of the civil society said on the occasion that a 28 member commission has been tasked to thoroughly study the current level of corruption as well as that committed here during the past 15 years. He added findings of this commission would be shared with the government, the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) besides being published in a form of book for public. “I assure everyone that this commission would be independent in its actions, and God willing! It would expose all those who committed corruption in the past 15 years”, he said.
Head of the civil society organisation said that a number of former governors, security chiefs and mayors have committed corruption on large scales, and instead of being held accountable the government has further promoted such individuals to even higher posts.
Hayatullah Hayat, the provincial governor assured the government’s full support for this commission. He added that a former mayor and police chief have already been referred to the court over charges of corruption. Qamaruddin Shinwari, Presidential Advisor, urged the newly established commission to fearlessly pursue cases of corruption and expose those involved in it.
