KABUL (SW) – The Kabul residents on Tuesday awarded a symbolic ‘Laziness Certificate’ to the administration over the messy traffic in the city.
At a protest demonstration in the western neighborhood of district 13, they charged the officials for turning blind eye towards violation of the rules by transporters. They said transporters inflate fares on their own during the rush hours, and drive recklessly.
Sharif Watandost, one of the protesters, said the Kabul Municipality, and the Directorate of Traffic are ‘useless and in-effective’ in term of setting and implementing rules.
The protesters demanded the Ministry of Transport to clearly chalk out fares for public and private transport in the city.
Esmat, another protester, said the transporters brazenly defy rules in the rush hours making commuters suffer.
Meanwhile, the transporters have blamed high prices of fuel for the inflated fares.
When contacted, Ashraf Haq Shanas, spokesman for the Ministry of Transport, said the protest is ‘unjust’. He said the fares are clearly regulated, and those found guilty would face legal action.
These issues with the urban traffic have surfaced amid suffocating pollution in the city.
