Cinema in Herat witnessing a boom

HERAT CITY (SW) – Film makers and drama producers in Herat claim despite all the limitations of the conservative Afghan society, they are witnessing a growth in the industry.

Abdul Rasheed Azimi, a senior film producer from Herat, told Salam Watandar he has produced three drama serials and a number of short films in the past two years alone. These include ‘Facebook.Com’, ‘Zaban-e-Zargari’ (goldsmith tongue) and ‘Kilk Shashum’ (sixth finger). Azimi said despite the fact that the government has neglected the cinema, the enthusiasm of hundreds of artists and extensive production indicate the film and television industry is reviving in Herat.

The senior film producer said there are many youngsters in Herat eager to make a mark in the entertainment industry in need of support from the government.

Mehmood, a local artist in the province, said the film industry in Herat is more vibrant than in the capital Kabul. The local population is equally cheerful to see the boom.

The head of directorate of information and culture, Arya Raufyan, acknowledge the significance of the cinema in promoting culture of the country. She said robust production of films can also play pivotal role in promoting national culture internationally.

Officials at the directorate of information and culture in Herat said there is huge fan following  for the booming local film and television production.
