China provides aid to drought-affected Afghans

07/08/2018

KABUL (SW) – The National Disasters Management Authority on Tuesday inked a memorandum of understanding with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to provide aid to victims of drought.

The memorandum was signed by Najib Aqa Fahem, state minister for disaster management, and Liu Jinsong, Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to Kabul. With this China promised aid of over 3000 tons of rice and over 800 tons of wheat to drought victims in Afghanistan.

The minister said residents of 20 provinces in the north, northeast, southwest and central parts of the country are vulnerable to drought. He said persistent droughts have destroyed grazing lands besides decreasing the agriculture yield by 50 per cent. The minister added the government needs support of neighbouring countries to tackle the crisis.

Up to 400,000 humans and 3.3 million livestock animals in drought-hit areas need help, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Liu Jinsong said China is ready to extend more help in this regard.
