KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Hundreds of young children in Kandahar’s Daman district are deprived of education as there is not a single school in its Malang Karez area.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, local elders said they have appealed to the government time and again to establish schools in their area, but to no avail. Haji Lala, a local elder, said he personally filed at least five applications at the provincial directorate of education for the establishment of school, but no action has been taken so far. Mohammad Raheem, another resident of the area, charged the directorate of education for depriving the children of their basic human right in this part of the country.

Some 900 families are living in the Malang Karez area of the district. Its residents complain generations have grown up here without basic education due to the dearth of schools.

The local directorate of education claimed a basic school has been established in the area. Nazar Mohammad Samimi, spokesman for the directorate of education, promised the demands of the locals would be addressed in regard to a proper school.

Up to 100 schools in different parts of Kandahar are closed due to insecurity, and many among those functional in the safer parts of the province lack facilities.
