KABUL (SW): Following reports about launch of biometric identity cards at the Arg (Presidential Palace), Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Unity Government (NUG) on Friday called for halting the process.
Reports suggest a number of top officials have filled the forms and have submitted their biometric details for the proposed cards, however, the CEO has stressed this is a major national matter, and needs debate to reach a social agreement and consensus.
The statement further stresses that till such consensus is reached, the process for the proposed biometric identity cards shall be halted.
Meanwhile, Shah Hussain Murtazawi, deputy spokesman for the President, has stated in a statement that the new biometric identity cards in line with the international standards are a demand of the public, and the government is committed to it.
The Chief Executive will talk on the issue with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday, the statement by Abdullah's office added.
