Caribbean Premier League kick-offs

KABUL (SW): The latest edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is set to get under way from Wednesday (June 29) in the region southeast of the US.

Star cricketers like AB de Villiers, Brendon McCullum, Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson and Adam Zampa are some of the star players who will be featuring for the first time in the Caribbean Premier League. Kumar Sangakkara, who had helped Jamaica Tallawahs to a title win in the maiden edition, returns after missing the previous two editions. Other star attractions include Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla, David Hussey and more.

The matches would begin at 05:30 Afghanistan time. The CPL first began in 2013, and since then are played every year.

Seven venues will host the CPL 2016 matches which includes six games at the Lauderhill Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, marking a new beginning for league cricket in The United States of America.

On Wednesday, defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders will take on St. Lucia Zouks at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain. According to the games’ official website, including the play-offs and the final, a total of 34 Twenty20 (T20) games will be played in the fourth edition of the CPL, over a period of 40 days.

In the three editions so far, there have been different champions every year. Jamaica Tallawahs won the inaugural edition in 2013 under the captainship of Chris Gayl while Barbados Tridents clinched the second edition in 2014 under the captainship of Carron Polard, followed by Trinbago Knight Riders last year under the leadership of Devin Bravo.
