PESHAWAR (SW): The Taliban in Pakistan have taken responsibility for a deadly terrorist attack near a mosque in Pakistan’s restive tribal belt.

A blast outside a mosque at Shendak bazaar in Parachinar city of Kurram Agency killed at least 22 people and injured over 100 others on Friday. The explosion in a remote area bordering Afghanistan came as people gathered for Friday prayers near the women’s entrance of a Shia mosque. According to Geo News, an unidentified person parked a car next to the mosque, which exploded.

Ikramullah Khan, the political agent for Parachinar, has confirmed the death toll. He said further investigations into the attack are underway. The same city was targeted in January when an explosion killing more than 20 civilians. That attack too was claimed by the TTP and its associated militant group the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al Alami.

The country’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attack.
