Campaign against not naming women’s names launched

KABUL (SW): A group of young Afghan women and girls have launched a social media campaign "Where Is My Name" against the culture of hiding women's name in the public sphere.

Like many other conservative societies, men in Afghanistan tend to pronounce women by their male relatives instead of calling their actual names. Nilofar Neksar, an organizer of this campaign, told Salam Watandar it aims to challenge the stigma associated with naming a female with her actual name. She stressed that the government should ensure that the girls and women’s actual names are marked in officials documents instead of their male relatives.

Lala Usmani, another member of the campaign, said that the participants of this campaign are striving hard in the social media to get rid of this this outdated norm.

On the occasion of Mothers’ Day, Salam Watandar invited its listeners to engage in a discussion on a similar subject. It stirred a healthy debate on why some men shy away from calling the names of their sisters, wife, mother or other female relative.
