Broken bridges leave Kunar residents stranded

16/10/2017

ASADABAD (SW): A number of bridges recently built on the Kunar River have deteriorated due to various reasons sparking concerns among a large number of population that heavily rely on them.

One such example of broken bridge is the Zeray Baba Bridge that connects a remote area with Khas Kunar and Nangarhar’s Shewa district. Residents here now risk their lives and walk across the river via the hanging cables of the remains of it. Similar bridges in the Kotkay area, and in Paligram and Sokay district are on the verge of complete destruction.

A number of Kunar residents told Salam Watandar they are faced with grim challenges while transporting the ailing and elderly people here. The locals categorically blamed substandard construction and embezzlement in development projects for the poor state of bridges.

Meanwhile, the authorities have expressed determination to survey all broken bridges, and repair them. Abdul Ghani Musmim, spokesman for the governor, informed that these bridges were developed over a decade ago, and their reconstruction would be ensured in a transparent manner.

The Kunar River is one of main rivers in Afghanistan.
