25/01/2019

KABUL (SW) – Mulla Abdul Ghani Biradar, a Taliban-era senior commander, has been named as the head of this group’s Qatar office.

The Taliban have announced this move is aimed at “progress and success of the talks for peace with the U.S”. There are reports the Taliban have transferred and replaced a number of shadow-governors in Afghanistan, and a prison swap has also taken place.

This comes as the talks between the two sides in Doha, Qatar have entered fifth day.

According to the Taliban, an eight member Taliban delegation is led by Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai while the 11-member U.S. delegation is led by Zalmay Khalilzad.

The 50-year-old Mullah Abdul Ghani Biradar is among the founding leaders of the Taliban along with Mohammad Umer who founded the movement in 1994.
