KABUL (SW): While cars and other vehicles have been used increasingly for daily commutes, but still some people bike. Nurullah Omar head of Department of Urban Development in Faryab has been commuting to his office using his bike.
Nurullah told Salam Watandar that lack of office vehicles for Department of Urban Development personnel, the need for the day-to-day presence in the office, and his efforts to reduce congestion and air pollution, has caused him to bike to his work every day.
Nurullah said that in order to bring a change in the society, one should start with himself. Nonetheless, the residents of Faryab also praised Nurullah for his initiative to bike to his work and said if all the government officials do the same, the congestion inside the city will be reduced and it will set a precedent for others.
A few years ago, the motorcycles were banned inside the Maimana city by the security forces because of security risks as Taliban were using the bikes, therefore, those who did not have the money to purchase a car, have been using bicycles (bikes) for the daily commute. Though, this is the first time that a government official is using his bike to commute to work.
